Anger has had a bad press for a long time. Even if this emotion has the potential to be extremely destructive, we may realize it also can be extremely beneficial.
The key message of anger is “no more”; in this statement, there is a life force unfolding and a boundary that is being set. Anger is born out of fear or hurt; at that moment our needs are not met. The beauty of anger is that it is very alchemical. Its capacity to destroy also invites something new to be born.
Depending on our blueprint and our lineage, the experience of anger can be terrifying or easy to access. It is important for each of us to notice our patterns toward that emotion. If we want to be alive and present, if we want freedom, we need to be in touch with every emotion.
The problem with anger is not its intensity but what the mind does with it. As soon as our mind wants to control the situation, no healing can happen. If we legitimize our anger, want to get rid of it, are ashamed of it, imagine a revenge scenario, or anything else the mind can plot us into, we are not creating an opportunity for personal transformation. If we stay present with the essence of anger, we let go of control and allow parts of ourselves to die. This is the true spiritual practice, more challenging than many meditations and potentially more healing and more transformative.
