Relaxation

The practice of relaxation is not as easy as you may think. As soon as you connect to yourself without outside distractions, you may realize how much agitation or worry you are holding in.

First, conscious relaxation requires self-love as a foundation. You need to accept where you are, no matter how tense you may be. Rejection creates agitation; acceptance creates stability; and from there, relaxation can happen. Second, conscious relaxation invites you to let go and trust. At the moment you relax, you give yourself permission to be useless which is a quality you need to enhance. (There is a chapter “Be Useless” in the “Way to Be” book).

Now you have many ways you could practice. Explore until you find something that resonates within your body. Walking, painting, conscious breathing, chanting, journaling, dancing could be part of your practice if your intent is to create deeper intimacy with yourself.

Some of you may wonder what the purpose of relaxing is. We all know the benefits at the physical level: it gives you more energy and slows down the aging process. Now, beyond the anatomy and physiology of the body, if you are relaxed you can deeply listen without an agenda, you can shift from a place of reaction to a place of choice, and most importantly you give yourself an opportunity to have more options to respond to a situation; you are not driven with the same behavioral patterns because nothing is in tension anymore.

From there, you are living with the power to think, feel, and make your own decisions.

My wish is that you choose to practice relaxation, as it also will help you to perform better. I have been around the best golfers and the best musicians in the world; their best performance happens only when they are completely relaxed.

If you want to dive into this practice, first assess yourself and notice from a scale from 1 to 10, where do you stand? Can you accept where you are? Then, you may explore ways you can relax more and assess how and what triggers you in your life. From there, you can fine-tune your lifestyle which is the foundation for your true radiance.
