Trust does not rely on our naivety or our lack of discernment, trust is founded on our capacity to surrender. We don’t trust with our eyes closed, we trust with our eyes open.
Our lack of trust exhausts our stress response and enhances our anxiety. Our lack of trust prevents us from being present, connected, and peaceful. Safety, for most of us reading this article, is not something that comes from the outside of us; it comes from the inside. It always starts in the mind. When we don’t feel safe, we fight the perceived enemy and try to fix or push away any danger.
The enemy is not outside of us; it is inside of us, and it is our mind. Knowing our mind and sitting with it is an important part of a spiritual practice. No matter how uncomfortable it may be, it teaches us to open, contemplate, and detach from it. Then we can trust life, ourselves, and open the heart deeper.
