The foundation for our happiness starts in our suffering. If we are afraid of our unhappiness, it is going to be very challenging to be happy. Being curious and not running away from our pains is the school we signed up for at the time of incarnation. Curiosity requires a neutral mind and that is our biggest lesson on earth.
Now, like every skill we learn, it is important to stay radically authentic. The danger of practicing neutrality is to be tempted to wear a neutral mask and disconnect from our feelings. At that moment we are not neutral; we are dissociating. The best way to learn neutrality is to spend some time realizing when our mind is not neutral. Perfection is a story of our mind; perfection creates illusion.
If you choose to practice neutrality throughout your day, your vision of happiness will change. You will realize that it is not something to grab, but it is a state of being that is inside of you always. Let’s be clear, neutral thinking is not positive thinking; we are not pretending things are great and nor are we looking for a bright angle either.
Every time we practice equanimity, we don’t live in a subject/object paradigm. Our connection with everything changes because we are not the center of the universe anymore; we are part of it. From there we remember that happiness is simply our true identity.
