Can we allow ourselves to feel? Can we allow ourselves to feel and stay with what is? Can we approach the practice of conscious feelings like meditation?
When things may be too raw in our lives or in this world, we may not like to acknowledge or stay with our feelings. We have become feelings junkies: addicted to feeling good only and refusing any sort of bad feelings. When we can’t stay with our feelings, we are powerless, as we have lost our sense of self.
Depending on our characterology, our family of origin, and our cultural identity, some feelings are welcomed, while others are banished. Conscious feeling is the practice of risking being inappropriate in your family or culture as it is the practice of feeling everything and trusting that emotions are always in motion. If you look at a three-year-old, she will not be mad or sad for long; her emotions will come and go.
When we are resisting a feeling, know it is our mind that resists that feeling. It wants something else out of us. Our mind does not know how to love us the way we are moment to moment; and yet, we listen to it a lot.
Embrace the practice of conscious feeling if you want to be and stay vibrant.
