Hibernation is a natural process woven into the rhythms of the wild. Many animals enter this state every winter. Yet in a culture driven by electronics and constant stimulation, it is easy for us to drift away from nature’s cycles, and with that, to drift away from our own true nature.
When we drift away from our own nature, we open the doors for miss alignment at all levels. Creating space in our life to “hibernate” can be a profound gift. It allows us to step away from the call for more—more things, more movement, more distractions—and with that, to step away from the confusion, impulses, and noise that often follow.
Hibernation is not always easy, but it is a beautiful adventure. Like animals, we can slow our breath down and, in the stillness, we may watch your mind travel from one thought to another, one project to one desire, and gradually begin to see clearly where we truly are. Unexpected emotions can arise, yet in this place of resting we give our being an opportunity to detox and rejuvenate at all levels.
A simple way to begin is to be completely phoneless and computerless for a day, half a day or a couple of hours. At home or in a quiet space, with a book, a canvas, a journal, a collage, yoga, tai chi, meditation, music… The fewer activities, the better. The magic is not to do it once but to incorporate it in your life. Start where you can, take one step toward your own liberation.
You are the magic. You are the medicine, nothing else, no one else.
